“Monday is interesting because every network kind of has its niche,” says Susan Hajny, broadcast research manager at GSD&M. “As competitive as it looks, I think they’ll all survive pretty well.”
NBC will win the night in 18-49s, at least up through midseason, when the networks will rejigger their schedules and roll out any new shows to replace those that tanked in the ratings.
NBC hopes to build on the strength of “Heroes” at 9, leading out of the computer-geek-themed “Chuck” at 8 p.m., which replaces “Deal or No Deal,” and leading into another new show, the time-travel drama “Journeyman,” which replaces the canceled “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.”
The three dramas give NBC an edge over its competitors because the lineup has a nice audience flow that’s likely to keep viewers tuned in for much of the night.
“We’re giving it to NBC in 18-49s,” says Shari Anne Brill, senior vice president and director of programming at Carat. “They decided to vertically program that night with sci-fi-type dramas, sort of a combination of sci fi and supernatural shows. They’ll also win in 18-34s.”
